ArentFox Schiff Adds Experienced Privacy, Data Security, and FTC Defense Partner D. Reed Freeman Jr. in DC
ArentFox Schiff is pleased to welcome Partner D. Reed Freeman Jr. to the firm’s Trademark and Copyright practices in Washington, DC. With nearly 30 years of experience in privacy, data security, and Federal Trade Commission defense, Reed brings a deep understanding of the law and valuable experience to bear for clients.
Reed has represented clients in scores of FTC investigations and enforcement actions involving privacy, data security, advertising, and other consumer protection matters. He also defends clients in state consumer protection investigations and data breach responses and advises clients on compliance with state privacy laws, such as the California Consumer Privacy Act (as amended by the California Privacy Rights Act), data breach notification laws, international privacy laws, and federal and state advertising laws and rules.
Additionally, Reed counsels clients in developing globally compliant privacy policies; navigating privacy and security issues that arise in mergers, acquisitions, and other transactional matters; and defending against false advertising disputes. His clients span an array of industries, including retail, hospitality, financial services, technology (both software and hardware), and advertising, and include publishers, application developers, data aggregators, trade associations, industry coalitions, and social media-based advertising companies.
Earlier in his career, Reed served as a staff attorney in the FTC’s Bureau of Consumer Protection, followed by a three-year stint at Arent Fox. In addition to his time in government and private practice, Reed also worked in-house as chief privacy officer and vice president for legislative and regulatory affairs for an online advertising company.
“With an expected ramp up in FTC enforcement activity and rulemaking across a wide range of areas, Reed’s addition could not have come at a better time. His impressive track record of successfully defending companies in FTC privacy investigations, and providing proactive and sophisticated counsel to stay ahead of rapid changes in data privacy law and digital advertising, will be of great value to our team and clients. We are thrilled to welcome him back to the firm.”
