Former Congressman Phil English Weighs in on Free Trade Attitude
Morning Consult recently conducted a poll for the Bloomberg Global Business Forum asking Americans for their reaction to free trade expansion. According to the results, more than half (52%) of those polled said they support the expansion of international free trade while 25% opposed it. Another near quarter of those polled said they had no opinion or didn’t know.
The poll comes amidst a White House that has been less than favorable in its view of international trade deals. Recently, the Trump Administration has removed the US from the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP), decried the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), and run into road blocks on negotiations on a trade agreement with South Korea. Former Congressman and current Arent Fox senior government relations advisor Phil English (R-Pa) commented, “If the US, Canada, and Mexico can move to a trade agreement with higher standards that will strengthen the status of North America as a competitor, and develop some norms that can be encouraged elsewhere.” Phil, who is a former member of the House Ways and Means Committee and House Trade Committee, also added, “Most people believe trade with their Canadian neighbors is good, but they have concerns over aspects of NAFTA as it’s currently drafted.” said English.
