Former Congressman Phil English Comments on Trade Policy in Bloomberg BNA
In Bloomberg BNA’s WTO Reporter article “Trump Committed to Promises on Trade Deals: Spokesman,” Trump transition team spokesman Sean Spicer confirmed that President-elect Trump remains committed to his campaign promises to withdraw from the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) and to renegotiate regional trade agreements with Canada and Mexico.
Trump does not want US companies to benefit from out of the US while leaving American workers behind, said Spicer. Former Representative and Arent Fox senior government relations advisor Phil English believes that Robert “Bob” Lighthizer, Trump’s nominee for the next US Trade Representative, is a “master negotiator” well-equipped to take on rethinking the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) given his background in understanding how manufacturing has been disadvantaged by current policy. Lighthizer would also continue to create opportunities, particularly for the US agricultural and energy sectors, Phil added.
