Former Congressman Phil English Comments on Creation of National Trade Council under President-elect Trump
Inside U.S. Trade recently discussed the creation of a National Trade Council by President-elect Trump in the article, “Analysts: Trump’s National Trade Council may spur cooperation, or new tensions.”
The White House National Trade Council would be formed in part to advise Trump on innovative strategies in trade negotiations, coordinate with other government agencies to assess manufacturing capabilities and the defense industrial base, and help match unemployed Americans with new opportunities in manufacturing. How the Council will work with the various agencies with trade responsibilities remains to be seen. Some analysts believe the Council could fuel tension in the Administration, possibly be design. Most analysts agree that the Council is in line with Trump’s campaign rhetoric. “Having a White House National Trade Council suggests that trade will play a much higher role in policy than the current administration. It will emphasize the importance of the topic and restore the trust in trade by the American people,” said former Congressman and Arent Fox senior government relations advisor Phil English.
