VW Compliance Monitor's Report - Three Takeaways

Automotive Practice leader Aaron Jacoby recently spoke with Law360 about Volkswagen AG.

The company has struggled with transparency and made slow progress in implementing internal controls in the three years since its emissions-cheating scandal.  VW’s problems signal that the automaker faces a long road ahead to right its past misdeeds. Part of the struggle with transparency includes a reluctance to be more transparent with the outside monitor, which could be because VW is not used to intense scrutiny in its home country where it is largely revered. “These are iconic companies in Germany so just the fact that they’re allowing this [outside monitoring] is unique,” Aaron said. “So they might look at it the way [President Donald] Trump is looking at the Mueller investigation. It would have that level of intensity of what are they going to find, what will they come up with next and will there be any other indictments that come out of it.”
