Arent Fox Partner Craig Engle Talks with Roll Call About Menendez Trial
Arent Fox Political Law leader Craig Engle was featured in Roll Call on the topic of trial venue selection for the corruption case of Sen. Robert Menendez, D-N.J.
The Roll Call article compares the Menendez trial to the prosecutions of Rep. William J. Jefferson and Sen. Ted Stevens. Sen. Stevens was prosecuted in Washington, DC where his unanimous conviction on all seven counts was overturned due to prosecutorial misconduct, but Rep. Jefferson was found guilty in 2009 without issue by a federal jury in Alexandria, Va. Menendez’s attorneys recently argued to move their case from New Jersey to the District.
Mr. Engle offered his insights on the importance of location to this case and previous corruption trials. “The Justice Department may be trying to ‘un-Stevens’ itself by pleading the case differently, assigning different lawyers to it, and asking a particular judge to take a look at it, not here in the District,” he said.
