NHTSA Wants Public Comment On Self-Driving Car Safety Rules

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration announced Thursday that it will be seeking public comment on a possible framework of principles for safety in cars equipped with automated driving systems, or ADS.

The NHTSA said in a statement that while there are currently no ADS-equipped vehicles for sale to the public and widespread deployment of such vehicles is likely years off, the administration aims to begin setting up a framework for defining and assessing the competence of ADS systems.

“This rulemaking will help address legitimate public concerns about safety, security and privacy without hampering innovation in the development of automated driving systems,” Secretary of Transportation Elaine L. Chao said in a press release.
