AgTech Industry Group Co-Leader Karen Carr will present on two panels at the American Agricultural Law Association’s (AALA) 2023 Annual Educational Symposium in Charlotte, North Carolina, on November 9-11.

Karen will present alongside Timothy Gruenisen, Senior Counsel of Regulatory, Stewardship, and Licensing at Corteva Agriscience, and Dan Jenkins, Vice President of Regulatory & Government Affairs at Pairwise, in a presentation titled “Gene Editing and Agriculture: The Importance of Flexible and Adaptable Regulatory Frameworks.” They will share what they’ve seen from US and international regulators on the application of gene editing to agriculture, describe gene editing’s regulatory history, provide examples of current frameworks and approaches to gene editing and examples of new directions in science, and offer their thoughts on ways to make policy less prescriptive and more “future-proof.”

In her second presentation, titled “Precision Fermentation in Agriculture: The Legal Issue,” Karen will be joined by Tony Pavel, Deputy General Counsel of Global Food Law at Perfect Day Company, and their moderator, Drew Kershen, Earl Sneed Centennial Professor (Emeritus) at the University of Oklahoma, College of Law, to provide a high-level overview of precision fermentation, a food production technique that is currently being used in new and innovative ways, as well as a discussion of the regulatory pathways and other considerations related to product approval and marketing in the United States and abroad.
